On March 4, 2021, a former BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution Butner in Butner, North Carolina, was arrested following an Indictment charging him with one count of conspiracy, one count of bribery of a public official, and two counts of introduction of contraband. Casey Covington was indicted in the Eastern District of North Carolina. According to the Indictment, from on or about June 9, 2019, through on or about August 11, 2020, Covington accepted monetary bribes from inmates and their family members in exchange for smuggling marijuana, tobacco, cellular phones, and alcohol into the prison. This investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Washington Field Office with forensic assistance provided by the OIG’s Cyber Investigation Office.
