Don R. Berthiaume was sworn in as the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on August 14, 2026, following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
As Inspector General, Mr. Berthiaume leads an independent organization dedicated to promoting integrity, accountability, and excellence across DOJ. The DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG) conducts audits, inspections, evaluations, investigations, and reviews to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct, while identifying opportunities to improve DOJ programs and operations.
Before his confirmation, Mr. Berthiaume served as Acting Inspector General and Senior Advisor to the DOJ OIG. He has more than 2 decades of experience in public service, oversight, and law, including senior leadership roles at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development OIG and prior service with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the DOJ OIG.
As Inspector General, he is committed to independent, objective, and transparent oversight that strengthens DOJ’s ability to carry out its mission. He also emphasizes identifying systemic issues, offering practical recommendations, and recognizing effective programs and dedicated public servants.
His vision for the OIG is to foster professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement, ensuring the OIG remains a trusted source of independent oversight for DOJ, Congress, its employees, and the American people.
