On January 25, 2023, a former BOP Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, was arrested following an Indictment charging him with 11 counts of sexual abuse of a ward and 6 counts of sexual abuse. Mikael Rivera was indicted in the District of Hawaii. According to the Indictment, from in or about April 2017 through in or about May 2018, Rivera engaged in multiple sexual acts with one inmate using threats and engaged in sexually abusive conduct with two additional inmates who were at the time in official detention and under his custodial, supervisory, and disciplinary authority. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Los Angeles Field Office with assistance from the FBI Honolulu Field Office.
