Former BOP Lieutenant Sentenced for Conspiring to Violate the Civil Rights of an Inmate

On April 11, 2025, a former BOP Lieutenant previously assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Butner, North Carolina, was sentenced to two years’ probation for conspiring to violate the civil rights of an inmate. Daniel Mitchell was charged in the Eastern District of North Carolina. According to the Information, on or about December 8, 2021, Mitchell and another Correctional Officer (CO) entered into a conspiracy to punish and physically assault an inmate in the Special Housing Unit. The CO and others moved the inmate to a separate holding cell, where the CO struck and kicked the inmate after being directed to do so by Mitchell. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Washington Office; polygraph assistance was provided by the OIG's Dallas Office.
