On July 3, 2025, a former BOP Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, was sentenced to 96 months of imprisonment, followed by 3 years or supervised release, and a $600 assessment for six counts of sexual abuse of a ward. Mikael Rivera was sentenced in the District of Hawaii. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, from in or about April 2017 through in or about May 2018, Rivera engaged in multiple sexual acts with one inmate using threats and engaged in sexually abusive conduct with two additional inmates who were at the time in official detention and under his custodial, supervisory, and disciplinary authority. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s San Diego Locale with operational assistance from the FBI Honolulu Field Office; forensic assistance was provided by the OIG’s Cyber Investigations Office.
