On December 9, 2021, a former BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution Butner (FCI Butner) in North Carolina, was sentenced to 15 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release for one count of bribery of a public official. Casey Covington was sentenced in the Eastern District of North Carolina. According to a DOJ press release, from in or about 2019 through in or about 2020, Covington accepted approximately $31,000 in payments from inmates and their outside contacts in return for smuggling marijuana, tobacco, cellular phones, and alcohol into the prison. This investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Washington Field Office; forensic assistance was provided by the OIG’s Cyber Investigation Office.
