On May 7, 2026, a former Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution Bastrop (FCI Bastrop) in Texas was sentenced to 20 months incarceration, three years’ supervised release, and was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and a $100 special assessment for accepting bribes by a public official. Waldemar Perez was sentenced in the Western District of Texas. According to the factual basis in support of the guilty plea, on or about May 3, 2023, Perez received $300 to smuggle cigarettes and electronic cigarettes into FCI Bastrop. In total, from January 2022 through May 2023, Perez corruptly received approximately $77,651 in return for smuggling contraband into FCI Bastrop. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Houston Office and the FBI.
