On March 2, 2023, a former BOP Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution in Yazoo City, Mississippi, was sentenced to 12 months of incarceration, 3 years of supervised release, and a $2,000 fine for one count of attempting to provide contraband to a federal inmate. Ayona Thomas (formerly Ayona McGilberry) was sentenced in the Southern District of Mississippi. According to the plea agreement, McGilberry pleaded guilty to a one-count Indictment, which stated that on or about January 3, 2020, McGilberry did knowingly attempt to provide an inmate of a federal prison with marijuana. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Atlanta Area Office and the FBI.
