On August 25, 2026, a former BOP Computer Specialist previously assigned to the U.S. Penitentiary McCreary, in Kentucky, was sentenced to one year of probation with six months of home confinement for one count of false statement to fraudulently obtain workers’ compensation benefits. Edward Vincent Smith was sentenced in the Eastern District of Tennessee. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, from in or about January 2023, Smith certified he was not self-employed or involved in any business enterprise; however, Smith was self-employed in business enterprise and continued to receive workers’ compensation benefits. The investigation was conducted by OIG’s Fraud Detection Office.
