Former BOP Computer Specialist Pleaded Guilty to False Statement Charges

On September 18, 2025, Edward Vincent Smith, a former BOP Computer Specialist previously assigned to United States Penitentiary McCreary (USP McCreary) in Kentucky, pleaded guilty in the Eastern District of Tennessee to one misdemeanor count of false statement or fraud to falsely obtain federal employees’ compensation. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, Smith received workers compensation benefits from the U.S. government following a workplace injury; on or around January 10, 2023, Smith certified on his yearly benefits certification form that he was not self-employed or involved in any business enterprise. However, Smith was in fact self-employed in a business enterprise and continued to receive workers’ compensation benefits after making this material misrepresentation. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Fraud Detection Office.
