BOP Lieutenant Sentenced for Obstructive Falsification of Records

On April 8, 2026, a former Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Lieutenant assigned to the U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy (USP Big Sandy) in Inez, Kentucky, was sentenced in the Eastern District of Kentucky to 17 months incarceration followed by 12 months of supervised release, for one count of obstructive falsification of records. In April 2021, Michael Childers wrote a false incident report to cover up the assault of an inmate by BOP staff at USP Big Sandy. The investigation, which was conducted by the OIG’s Lexington Locale and the FBI.
