On April 5, 2023, a BOP Inmate formerly assigned to the Metropolitan Correction Center New York (MCC New York) was sentenced to 20 months of imprisonment and ordered to forfeit $4,400 in property for one count of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. Tyrell Sumpter was sentenced in the Southern District of New York. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea and court documents, from in or about October 2019 through in or about April 2020, Sumpter knowingly and willfully conspired with Correctional Officers at the MCC New York to smuggle contraband into the prison in exchange for money that was paid to the Correctional Officers via electronic payments, thereby intentionally depriving the BOP of the honest services by their employees. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s New York Field Office and the FBI.
