BOP Correctional Officer Settles to Resolve False Claim Act Allegations

Date

On January 19, 2023, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas entered a consent judgment of $20,833 plus interest against a BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the United States Penitentiary in Beaumont, Texas.  According to the Motion to Enter Consent Judgment, the judgment was based on an agreement between the United States and Ronald Veal to resolve a Civil Complaint alleging that Veal unlawfully received Paycheck Protection Program loans in violation of the False Claims Act.  According to the Civil Complaint, on or about April 29, 2021, Veal obtained a PPP loan to operate a catering business but Veal confirmed that he has never and does not presently operate a catering business.  The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Fraud Detection Office with support from the Houston Area Office.
