On February 4, 2026, a former BOP Correctional Officer who was assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution Coleman Medium (FCI Coleman Medium) in Florida, pleaded guilty to acceptance of a bribe by a public official in the Middle District of Florida. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, Karen Torres received bribery payments via electronic means as well as cash, for introducing tobacco and narcotic contraband into FCI Coleman Medium, and providing them to inmate Michael Velasquez who was previously convicted in June 2025. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Ocala Locale.
