On February 2, 2023, a former USMS Contract Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Leavenworth Detention Center in Kansas was sentenced to 14 months of imprisonment and 2 years of supervised release, as well as ordered to forfeit $555, for one count of bribery. James Bunch, who was terminated from his position with the USMS prior to the onset of the OIG investigation, was indicted in the District of Kansas. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, from on or about March 1, 2021, through on or about April 5, 2021, Bunch received at least $555 via Cash App, a mobile application that allows users to transfer money electronically, from inmates and/or their associates in exchange for using his position to introduce cellular phones into the facility. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Chicago Field Office and the FBI.
