On April 24, 2020, a former FBI Special Agent previously assigned to the FBI’s San Francisco Division was arrested following the execution of an arrest warrant pursuant to a Criminal Complaint charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official. Babak Broumand was charged in the Central District of California. According to the affidavit in support of the Criminal Complaint, from in or about January 2015 through in or about September 2017, Broumand participated in a conspiracy with a cooperating co-conspirator to commit bribery of a public official. In exchange for bribe payments averaging approximately $10,000 a month from the cooperator, Broumand and the cooperator allegedly conspired and agreed that Broumand would perform official acts and omit to do acts, query law enforcement databases, provide the cooperator with non-public law enforcement sensitive information and protection, and assist the cooperator’s efforts to evade detection by law enforcement. The investigation is being conducted jointly by the OIG’s San Francisco Area Office, the FBI, and the IRS.
