On July 14, 2026, a former BOP Maintenance Worker Supervisor was sentenced to 15 years and eight months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release. Patrick Shackelford was sentenced in the Northern District of Georgia. According to the indictment, Shackelford conspired with BOP inmates and allowed members of his plumbing work crew to drill a hole underneath the visitation sink, through which large amounts of contraband could be deposited into a voided area in the suicide ward, where only his inmates had access. Shackelford escorted inmates to retrieve contraband from the voided area. The scheme was discovered when a large stash of contraband, to include marijuana and approximately two pounds of methamphetamine, was found in the ceiling above Shackelford’s office. According to inmates charged in this investigation, Shackelford received a $5,000 cash bribe and pain pills. Shackelford was convicted on all counts following a nearly two-week jury trial. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Atlanta Office and the FBI.
