BOP Contract Counselor Convicted and Sentenced for Possession of a Controlled Substance

On August 19, 2026, a former BOP counselor previously assigned to the BOP’s Atlanta Residential Reentry Center (RRC), pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a schedule II-controlled substance in violation of Georgia Criminal Code (GCC) § 16-13-30(A)1, and one count of dangerous drugs not in their original container in violation of GCC § 16-13-75, was sentenced to 48 months supervised release and ordered to pay a fine of $3,805. Akira Brown was indicted by a Forsyth County Grand Jury on February 4, 2026. The indictment followed a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) investigation during a routine traffic stop that found her in possession of amphetamines, a schedule II narcotic, for which she had no prescription. Brown admitted to the FCSO she obtained the drugs illegally from a contact she was introduced to by an RRC inmate. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Atlanta Office, the FCSO, and investigators with the Forsyth County Prosecutor’s Office; forensic assistance was provided by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Laboratory.
