Special Agent

Our Special Agents are statutory law enforcement agents that seek and execute arrest and search warrants and carry firearms.

Special Agents promote integrity within the Department of Justice (DOJ), detect and deter waste, fraud, or abuse, and investigate allegations of criminal and serious administrative misconduct against employees, contractors, and grantees of the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration; the Federal Bureau of Prisons; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the U.S. Marshals Service; U.S. Attorney's Offices; and other DOJ components.

Current Openings

We are seeking Special Agents with a minimum of one year of specialized experience or equivalent to one GS grade level below position of interest, performing duties including: conducting investigations relating to bribery, fraud, theft, abuse, violations of civil rights, conflicts of interest, and other misconduct. Experience should include law enforcement operations and surveillance assignments.

We are seeking highly motivated, dedicated, and experienced investigators. Many of our Special Agents are seasoned investigators who come from other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and other Offices of Inspector General. Additional factors that will be considered when choosing Special Agent candidates are academic background, analytical ability, oral and written communications skills, maturity, and other factors.

Our Special Agents are criminal law enforcement agents who seek and execute arrest and search warrants, serve subpoenas, perform undercover operations, and carry firearms. They also investigate allegations of serious administrative misconduct. They are responsible for handling investigations from start to finish, including working with prosecutors on criminal prosecutions and making findings of administrative misconduct.

To apply for a position with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in DOJ, you must be a U.S. citizen. You may have access to classified or sensitive information and must undergo a background investigation and drug testing.

The Investigations Division’s cases usually involve alleged violations of fraud, abuse, and integrity laws that govern (DOJ) employees, operations, grantees, and contractors. Investigations Division Special Agents develop cases for criminal or civil prosecution or administrative action. In addition, the Investigations Division makes recommendations for corrective action when an investigation identifies an internal weakness within DOJ.

Annually, the Investigations Division receives more than 12,000 complaints of misconduct and opens approximately 300 investigations. DOJ OIG investigations result in criminal prosecutions, civil restitution, administrative actions, and millions of dollars in monetary recoveries, forfeitures, and fines every year.
