Non-DOJ Individual Pleaded Guilty to Theft in Connection with Health Care

Date

On June 2, 2020, a non-DOJ individual pleaded guilty to one count of theft in connection with health care.  Deanna JeffersonSmith pleaded guilty in the Northern District of Texas.  According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, in or about 2013, JeffersonSmith provided her children’s personal identifiers to a then-BOP Correctional Officer with whom she was friends, so that the Correctional Officer could add JeffersonSmith’s children to the Correctional Officer’s Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) health insurance as the Correctional Officer’s dependents.  JeffersonSmith then used that insurance coverage to obtain medical services for her children from in or about 2014 through in or about 2015, knowing that the children were not entitled to coverage under the Correctional Officer’s policy.  The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Dallas Field Office and OPM OIG, with assistance from the OIG’s Cyber Investigations Office.
