On February 7, 2024, a former BOP Special Investigative Services Technician assigned to the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, was sentenced to 5 years of probation with 4 months of home detention and ordered to pay $30,000 in fines, $300 in restitution, and a $125 special assessment for one count of theft by an employee of the United States and one count of wire fraud. Andy Johnson, who resigned from his position with the BOP, was sentenced in the Northern District of Georgia. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, Johnson seized a contraband phone from an inmate and stole $300 from the inmate’s Cash App account. In addition, according to the factual statement Johnson submitted a fraudulent application for a Paycheck Protection Program loan using a non-existent company. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Charleston Locale.
