Former BOP Correctional Officer Sentenced for Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law

On October 31, 2022, a former BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was sentenced to 24 months of probation for one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.  Adalberto Martinez was sentenced in the District of Puerto Rico.  According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, on or about September 23, 2016, Martinez, while acting under color of law, assaulted a pretrial detainee by striking him in the head with a closed fist, while the pretrial detainee was facing away from Martinez.  According to the factual statement, the pretrial detainee never threatened Martinez nor attempted to assault him. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Miami Field Office and the FBI.
