Former BOP Contract Food Service Officer Sentenced for Bribery of a Public Official


On February 25, 2021, a former BOP Contract Food Service Officer previously assigned to the Big Spring Correctional Center (BSCC), in Big Spring, Texas, was sentenced to eighteen months of incarceration and one year of supervised release for one count of bribery of a public official.  Alex Smith was sentenced in the Northern District of Texas.  According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, from in or about October 2019, through on or about January 15, 2020, Smith did knowingly demand, seek, receive, accept, and agree to receive and accept money in exchange for bringing cell phones to an inmate at the BSCC.  The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s El Paso Area Office.
