BOP Correctional Officer Pleaded Guilty to Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law


On June 2, 2022, a BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.  Adalberto Martinez pleaded guilty in the District of Puerto Rico.  According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, on or about September 23, 2016, Martinez, while acting under color of law, assaulted a pretrial detainee by striking him in the head with a closed fist, while the pretrial detainee was facing away from Martinez.  According to the factual statement, the pretrial detainee never threatened Martinez nor attempted to assault him.  The factual statement further states that Martinez wrote an official memorandum which falsely described the incident.  The investigation is being conducted by the OIG's Miami Field Office and the FBI's San Juan Field Office.
