Survey of INS's Anti-Smuggling Units
Report Number I-2001-003
March 2001

APPENDIX VII

OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL'S ANALYSIS OF MANAGEMENT'S RESPONSE

On February 14, 2001, the Inspections Division sent copies of the draft report to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) with a request for written comments. INS responded by memorandum from the Acting Commissioner dated, March 16, 2001 (APPENDIX VI).

INS concurred with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) that there are coordination and structural issues that need to be examined and evaluated in order to make INS's anti-smuggling program more effective and efficient.

INS agreed with both OIG recommendations and proposed corrective actions.

Recommendation 1

Resolved-Open. The OIG agrees with INS's plan to examine coordination and structural issues involving the Anti-Smuggling Units (ASUs). We request that INS provide us, by June 15, 2001, with a written time frame for the completion of its examination of the structure of the anti-smuggling program.

Recommendation 2

Resolved-Open. The OIG agrees with INS's plan to evaluate coordination and efficiency issues in order to streamline communications between ASUs and other parts of INS. We request that INS provide us, by June 15, 2001, with a written time frame for the completion of its evaluation of this matter.
