On April 02, 2026, a BOP Maintenance Worker Supervisor, Patrick Shackelford, was convicted in the Northern District of Georgia after he conspired with BOP inmates and allowed members of his plumbing work crew to drill a hole underneath the visitation sink, through which large amounts of contraband could be deposited into a voided area in the suicide ward, where only his inmates had access. Shackelford further provided weekly escorts for inmates to retrieve contraband from the voided area and escorted them to housing units, where the contraband was delivered. The scheme was discovered when a large stash of contraband, to include marijuana and approximately two pounds of methamphetamine, was found in the ceiling above Shackelford’s office. According to inmates charged in this investigation, Shackelford received a $5,000 cash bribe and pain pills. Shackelford was convicted on all counts following a six-day jury trial. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Charleston Locale and the FBI.
